Chris Plesko PDF Print E-mail

Chris Plesko is a unique individual.  Loads of natural talent, a warm personality, and an unquenchable fire for the things he loves.  Although he often gives credit to the instigator, Chris was a big impetus in getting the team going, his enthusiasm and fire brought things to a whole new level and it couldn't have happened without him.  Whether supporting the wife he adores, out camping in the snow, finishing top 10 solo at 24 Hours of Moab against some of the best riders in the country or hurtling his Galant down Bandimere's dragstrip faster than an early 90s 4-door sedan should ever go (see #719), Chris never does anything halfway.

What a lot of people don't realize is that Chris worked very hard to get where he is today.  People see him now and just figure he's always had success, but just like the rest of us, Chris has had his moments shattered on the side of the trail holding a Clif bar, he affectionately refers to it as the "Plesko 2005 training program".  But those moments, or pushing himself past the low points, are what drove him to be as motivated as he is today.  It's motivation like that which separates those simply with natural talents from those who become true champions.

Let's see Chris' interview questions...

Michelle Arentzen PDF Print E-mail

The saying goes "behind every good man is a good woman" and that's fitting with Michelle as our next interviewee following her husband Erik's interview. Another cyclist who also races cars, Michelle started racing bikes for CSU in college. Since then she's primarily been a road biker but has slowly been converting over to the dirt. Last year she showed her strength winning the Winter Park Hill Climb for the Beginner 19-29 women. She is also sporting a new Yeti 575 to help tame all those rocks and roots off road. In addition to her spreading her wings into the mountain bike arena, Michelle also did an excellect job racing with the team last year at the Cherry Creek time trial series. This year she's battling a neck injury and trying to get healthy but I know she's looking very forward to being able to get back on the bike as soon as possible.

Let's hear from Michelle herself now...

Erik Arentzen PDF Print E-mail

Erik is an original member of the car club that grew into the bike group that Scott roped into trying the Leadville 100 MTB race in 2005. Always tough and a strong racer, Erik not only finished the LT100 on his first try, but did so through a terrible asthma attack that put him in the hospital after the race! Since then he's finished again in 2006, raced hard in the Winter Park series moving up to the Sport class last season and continually improved throughout two seasons of racing the Cherry Creek time trial series.

Last season a bunch of the team also joined Erik on one of his yearly traditions, riding to the summit of Mount Evans on the forth of July. Erik organized a big group and it was a lot of fun climbing above 14,000 feet on a bike! This year you're equally likely to find Erik on his road bike, time trial machine, singlespeed mountain bike or his full suspension rig. Let's see what else he's got planned...

Dan Le PDF Print E-mail

Dan Le is another former Eastside rider like Scott and Truesdale that has moved onto bigger and better things with Ride Against the Machine. Although he lives in Colorado Springs, Dan can often be found making the long drive up to Denver to join everyone on the Wednesday group rides. In addition to racing mountain bikes in the Winter Park series, Dan also races the Cherry Creek Time Trial series as well as at the velodrome. While sometimes soft spoken, he is an excellent source of both weight weenie bike knowledge as well as comic relief. For a taste of that action make sure you check out "The Conversation" at Mike Brevoort's blog.

After you stop laughing, come back over and checkout what else Dan has to say...

Melissa Clark PDF Print E-mail

Melissa is the first rider of this weekend's featured dynamic duo, the Clark sisters. Coming back for her second season of racing, she's looking to build on the experience and sucesses she had in 2007. Last season she jumped into both the Cherry Creek time trial series and Winter Park, doing a great job riding an old Trek hardtail for most of the year. For 2008 she'll be piloting her sweet new Giant Anthem full suspension machine and is hoping to add Winter Park to her list of podium accomplishments!

In addition to racing, she's been tackling both Moab and Fruita and making great strides in her technical abilities. After bombing Porcupine Rim on the hardtail behind Scott, Erik and Craig, Melissa realized she could ride anything. She also has a secret weapon in her corner with her number one fan and daughter, Ayshia, plus our ringleader, Scott, cheering her on.

Now let's hear what the elder Clark has to say herself...

Nicolette Clark PDF Print E-mail

Nicolette is the second member of the dynamic Clark sister duo and the team is looking forward to her joining the Winter Park and Cherry Creek time trial crews this year. She's already done some mountain bike racing at the Firecracker 50 Sparkler, getting 2nd for the beginner women last year. In October 2007 she joined the RATM based 24 Hours of Moab team, Bufo Alvarius, and clicked off the fastest laps on her team. In addition to bike riding, Nicolette loves all things outdoors and is another member of the team in search of 14 summits.

Let's see what else she's planning for this year...

Shawn Meredith PDF Print E-mail

Hailing out of Michigan and new to the great state of Colorado, our newest team member is Shawn Meredith. Eager to put up some big miles in 2008, Shawn is already a stalwart member of the winter commuter crew, banging out some 25 miles of headlight and backpack duty each way. He's also a good sport about riding in all conditions as he joined Dave Nice and your interviewer extrodinarie for an all day, all terrain snow ride with Shawn tackling a snowpacked descent of Apex on cross tires. Plus we also learned he's quite amenable to gas station junk food lunches, endurance fuel of champions. Not one to let any of Colorado's goodies go to waste, he's also been doing pleny of snowboarding at the resorts when he's not riding. If you haven't met Shawn yet, or even if you have, checkout more about him below...

Marni Plesko PDF Print E-mail

Following close behind DeLeeuw in last years CCTT, at Winter Park and now in the interviews is Marni Plesko. This interviewer's exceptionally cute and wonderful wife is fresh off her first season of racing bikes. While nervous to do her first time trial and cross country MTB race, she persevered and ended up going the distance in both series. With the help of her friends and class partner, future Ride Against the Machine interviewee Melissa Clark, she took 2nd place for the 19-29 beginner women at the Winter Park series. This year she's looking to step up her racing in the sport class and keep pushing her endurance. During the off season you'll find her hiking 14ers, wandering the deserts of Fruita and Moab in search of dry dirt and most importantly, napping.

Let's see what else she has in store for this season...

Scott DeLeeuw PDF Print E-mail

Next up on the chopping block, I mean to be interviewed, is our primary organizer and leader Scott DeLeeuw. Without him it's doubtful that we'd all be riding together today. He saved our core team from the wrath of an egotistical fixed gear dictator and like a phoenix from the ashes made us into what we are today.

Leadville instigator, Wednesday ride leader and Cherry Creek time trial veteran, Scott is always there supporting his friends, cheering everyone else on and never without a smile on his face. He has put an incredible amount of work into our team this past year, much of it behind the scenes lining up great sponsors and creating this website. And his downhilling is another one of those areas where other riders can see improvement through dedication and hard work. Plus Scott is a great connaisseur of bicycles and cycling related activities. Whether you want to go shred some singletrack, hit up the time trial series, crank around the track on your fixie or ride your highwheeler, Scott is there to try it with you. Now let's hear what this great guy has to say...

Bill Henderson PDF Print E-mail

Welcome to the Ride Against The Machine team interviews. To kick off our first year as an official team we thought it would be a lot of fun to help everyone get to know a little more about each other and help all our followers out there meet everyone too. Our first contestant is Bill Henderson!

Although in the past he has been predominantly a dirt lover, the team has been converting him to doing some training on the road as well as doing the Cherry Creek Time Trial series with the group last year. And once you get him off road look out! He's tenacious about tackling technical trail tasks (Say that six times fast!). Bill is also the poster child for hard work yielding excellent improvement with 2007 seeing him atop the Clydesdale podium at the Winter Park series and an integral part of the 2nd place Clyde team at the 24 hours of Moab. On and off the bike, Bill is a great friend and person to have around and we're proud to have him be apart of our team. Now onto those all important questions...
